The Book of Kek
The Marsh
- 1In the beginning was the water, and the water was without form, and the dark lay upon it.
- 2And the Word moved over the face of the water, and the water was divided, and there was a shore.
- 3And out of the shallows He drew up the reeds, and out of the reeds He drew up the marsh, and He called it good.
- 4He did not call it great. He called it good, which is the older word and the heavier one.
- 5Now the marsh was the least of the places He had made. It was not the mountain, and it was not the city, and no road went through it.
- 6And in the marsh He set a small thing, and it had no armor, and no swiftness, and no voice that carried.
- 7And the small thing looked at the mountain, and at the city, and at the road that did not come, and it was silent.
- 8Then at dusk the Word said: sing.
- 9And the small thing said: I have no voice that carries.
- 10And the Word said: I did not ask whether it carries. I asked you to sing.
- 11So it sang, and the sound went out over the water, and it did not reach the mountain, and it did not reach the city.
- 12But it reached the next reed over.
- 13And that is how it began, and that is how it has gone on ever since.
